Owner Reviews, Ratings, Comments and Criticism
Fun: Dungeon Runners is a massively multiplayer online game where you can choose one of three character classes (ranger, mage or warrior) and explore dungeons fighting monsters and collecting gold and useful items. It's very pretty to look at, and it's a nice zen exercise. Your dungeon diving is driven by quests given by non-player characters; the voice acting of the NPCs is fun, and the quest descriptions can be entertaining. The community is generally friendly, although it seems to be younger on average than the World of Warcraft crowd and mostly male. Dungeon Runners can be played for free by downloading the game. Premium members pay a monthly subscription fee of $5 a month, and those who purchase the software in the box (rather than downloading it) get 6 months of premium membership and the much-coveted "bling gnome", which follows its owner around converting found items to gold and saving the player the effort of carrying it back to a merchant to sell. Premium members also gain experience faster than those who play for free, get more bank space, and can use the higher level items. Game play is repetitive, however. There is no room for player initiative or imagination. There is not much world to explore -- there's one little town; the rest is dungeons. Every quest involves killing a particular monster, killing a number of monsters, recovering something that monsters randomly drop when killed, or locating a place in the dungeon. What is particularly painful is that progress in a dungeon is not saved -- once you log off the game, the next time you play you will have the option to enter the dungeon at the level where you last were, but the entire dungeon will once more be unmapped and populated with monsters. As the quests send players to different levels of the dungeon, this means clearing the same dungeon level again -- and again -- and again. You will find yourself continuing to play long after you want to quit, just because you want to relocate your character on another level rather than quit and have to clear the current level yet again. Then there is the problem of lag. The servers are quite laggy and lag death is common; oddly, the amount of lag seems unrelated to server load. Players are forgiving because game play is cheap or free, but it can still get quite frustrating. A very fun way to spend $5 for a month. I doubt my interest will last that long.
